Decide what kind of time you have

A calendar date, a local wall-clock time, and a Unix timestamp are different representations. A date such as 11 September has no time zone by itself. A wall-clock time needs a location or zone to identify an instant. A Unix timestamp represents an instant using a count from the Unix epoch.

Use Date Difference for the interval between calendar dates. Use Age Calculator for a calendar-style breakdown from a birth date. Use the time-zone tool when translating a local time between supported zones. Use Unix Timestamp Converter when inspecting timestamps from an application or log.

Be careful around clock changes

Daylight-saving transitions can make a local clock time occur twice or not occur at all. A converter should not silently guess when the source time is ambiguous. Read the tool’s result and use the relevant zone’s rules for important schedules.

Check whether a timestamp is measured in seconds or milliseconds. A value interpreted in the wrong unit can point to an entirely different year. Dates in displayed results also depend on whether the output is UTC or local to your browser.

A useful checking sequence

  1. Identify the input type and its source.
  2. Confirm the date, source zone, and timestamp unit.
  3. Check the destination zone, including the day and date after conversion.
  4. Verify important deadlines with the system or organizer that owns the schedule.

Calendar calculations use stated conventions for month ends and leap years; read the relevant tool’s notes rather than assuming every service counts the same way. Report unexpected results using a fictional date and your browser time zone through Help & feedback.
